Eldon Ministerial Alliance Awarded Health and Wellness Grant from Miller County Health Center to Distribute AEDs

The Eldon Ministerial Alliance recently was awarded a 2018 Miller County Health Center Health and Wellness Grant. The Alliance’s grant project, “AED Equipment for Houses of Worship,” is designed to distribute one dozen Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), to 12 churches in Miller County. The total grant award is $16,140.00.

“Part of our churches’ mission is care of the community around us,” said Rev. Dr. Bill Foglesong, pastor of First Christian Church of Eldon and treasurer of the Alliance. “We wish to help churches in the area be better equipped and better trained to respond to those having a medical emergency.”

According to the American Heart Association, Missouri has the 11th highest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. In Miller County, cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are the leading cause of death (32.6% of all deaths).

Any church in Miller County is eligible to apply for an AED unit. Congregations that apply must designate a contact person for the project, in addition to the pastor, and commit to paying for a minimum of three church members to attend CPR/AED and First Aid training this fall. The Alliance will hold the training on three different dates in October and November in Eldon and handle the registrations; cost is $85.00 per person. Each training can accommodate up to 18 participants. Capital Region Medical Center’s Corporate and Community Health Department will conduct the “Heartsaver AED” training course sponsored by the American Heart Association.

The project contacts for the 12 churches selected to receive an AED unit will be required to submit information as requested by the Alliance to fulfill reporting requirements of the MCHC. Each church that receives an AED unit will be responsible for installation and maintenance of the equipment. The AEDs will be distributed after training and reporting requirements are met. The grant period is June 1, 2018 through May 31, 2019.

“The Health Center’s Board of Trustees approve the Health and Wellness Grants to be used within Miller County for the benefit of Miller County residents and our visitors,” said Michael Herbert, Administrator, Miller County Health Center. “The Eldon Ministerial Alliance’s grant for AEDs is one of 13 grants awarded, totaling $184,000 during 2018."

Deadline to apply is Sept. 14, 2018. A selection committee will select the 12 churches and notify them by Sept. 28, 2018.
The Eldon Ministerial Alliance is an ecumenical/interdenominational organization of churches. The churches come together to hold community worship experiences and to distribute benevolence funds.
